Product rendering is a digital alternative to product photography. Instead of making a prototype and setting this up in a studio, rendering allows you to go from design straight to presentation. We use 3D-models to create photo realistic images and animations without physical production. This way, you can save time and money, communicate with clients more efficiently and turn more leads into sales.

The five steps of product rendering

3D-modelling

3D modelling entails the creation of a digital 3-dimensional model of a finished product. This is the starting point of any rendered image. The higher the detail in the initial 3D model, the more realistic the image will turn out. Therefore it is important that - if you supply us with a CAD-model (optional) - it is detailed enough. Alternatively, we can create a 3D-model from scratch based on your blueprints or sketches.

Materials and textures

Once the 3D model has been completed, we import it into the rendering software. Here, we’ll start by assigning materials to the blank model. Assigning materials can be seen as colouring in a black and white image. We use textures, bump maps, labels and some reference images to create a digital version of the real material. Getting the materials right is essential to make your product look realistic.

Scene development, camera positioning and lighting

When all objects are textured, we create a realistic virtual space for the product, just like with product photography.  The scene, extra props and the lighting will provide the backdrop and the overall mood of the visualisation and indicates where and how the product will be used. Now our entire scene is set, we just need to get the right angles of your product to make sure that it looks great. After we do the final tweaks and set up the desired output format, we are ready to start processing.

Processing

We launch the software to start processing the images. This process can vary greatly in length. The complexity of the scene determines how long our render engine needs to calculate lighting rays throughout the scene before the image is completely crisp and detailed. Luckily, we don’t have to be around for this phase and often let the process run overnight.

Post processing and delivery

Now that everything has been processed, we do the final adjustments in image editing software, such as colour balancing, adding captions, … After all, we want to make sure you have fully finished deliverables. Finally, all our created content is sent to your email inbox or your preferred cloud service. We love this step the most, as we can all share in the excitement about the new product and its awesome presentation.
